OpenURL

Gale electronic products support reference linking using the open linking environment of the OpenURL standard. An OpenURL system consists of a context-sensitive, electronic resource installed and configured to run on a library computer. Once you have enabled the OpenURL feature, patrons can click on an OpenURL link and an "outbound" request will be sent, in the form of an OpenURL, to your library's designated OpenURL server. The patron will see a new browser window open, displaying the various electronic resources available for the selected citation or article.

  1. Navigate to the Location Summary page of the account for which you wish to configure OpenURL settings.
  2. From the Location Summary page, click Discovery Services in the left-hand sidebar menu. Then select OpenURL from the submenu.
  3. The OpenURL page is displayed.
  4. Add or change the settings as described in the table below.
  5. Click the Save button to save your settings.
OpenURL Option Description
Version of OpenURL Select either "Version 0.1" or "Version 1.0" depending on what your location supports.
Server address Enter the URL for your OpenURL server. For example: http://mylibrary.sfxserver.lib.us
http://demo.exlibrisgroup.com:8888/demo
Link title Enter a description that will appear as the link text whenever the OpenURL link appears in those Gale resources that support this feature.
Custom icon / Current icon You can optionally specify the URL for a customized icon representing the OpenURL server to appear on the Citation List. Otherwise leave the field blank to use the standard (default) icon. For best viewing, your customized icon should be 20 pixels high. The Current Icon will be displayed; if an image does not appear, make sure you entered the correct URL. NOTE: If you specify a customized icon, you should also set the citation style on the General Preferences page to "Icon."
Display OpenURL link when full text is displayed Use this setting to show or suppress the OpenURL link when the patron accesses a full-text document. Suppressing the link means it will only appear for citation-only and abstract-only documents.
Display OpenURL button on citation page From the search results page, patrons will be able to use the OpenURL feature to search for the full-text version of a citation or for additional, relevant information pertaining to the citation through your library's OpenURL server, depending on your OpenURL service. When a patron clicks on the OpenURL link for a given citation, the various search options of your library's OpenURL service available for that citation will be presented in a second browser window. Use this setting to indicate if the OpenURL link will be present on search results citations or not.
Display OpenURL button with article Use this setting to show or suppress the OpenURL link on the document display page.
Display OpenURL button with Mark List Use this setting to show or suppress the OpenURL link on the Mark List/Marked Items/Saved Items page.
